Acupuncture is a treatment that consists in pricking the patient with a special needle. “Traditional” Chinese acupuncture uses a system of ancient ideas but many modern western practitioners find that acupuncture can be understood in scientific terms. In many cases we make use of “trigger points”. Needling the trigger point can relieve pain in distant areas.
We use modern acupuncture (also known as Dry Needling) as part of an osteopathic treatment. Acupuncture in osteopathy can help reduce inflammation in joints and tension in muscles and in treating both migraines and headaches.
Acupuncture in osteopathy is very effective and most patients find it less painful than expected and quite often pain-free…this includes patients who have been anxious or nervous at first. The needles we use are ultra-fine, sterile and individually wrapped – it is nothing like having an injection!
The needles are only left in place for about five minutes and then we use manual techniques to encourage the desired tissue change.
Acupuncture in osteopathy has also proved very effective during pregnancy to ease pregnancy related back and pelvic pain as well as to help induce or aid labour. It helps your cervix dilate, the baby to descend and contractions to continue and strengthen.
